Karmin ‘s new single may be the sunniest song to ever bear a title like “Broken Hearted,” but what else would you expect from the eternally chipper swag-pop duo? Frontgirl Amy Heidemann’s got one of those Disney-princess-esque dispositions — you know, the sort of totally sincere sweetness that suggests she probably wakes up each morning to cartoon birds pulling her covers away. But with all due respect, we so can’t see Cinderella or any of those other prisses rapping with anything remotely like the super-slick flow that Amy shows off on “Broken Hearted.” Nor are they likely prone to “sippin’ on that Patron” or classifying their personal style as “business in the front, party in the back,” but who knows?

Despite the cheerful-sounding title, Electric Guest ‘s “American Daydream” video plays out more like uneasy social commentary than a sunny romp, and it’s riveting. The Los Angeles duo, featuring frontman Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton, have been making electro-soul waves with recently released songs that range from the sprawling, moody “Troubleman” to the downright soul-kissed “This Head I Hold,” all from their forthcoming Danger Mouse -produced debut album, Mondo. “American Daydream” adds a soulful sway and catchiness to some otherwise ominous sentiments

By Nadeska Alexis Lana Del Rey’s recent performance on “Saturday Night Live” didn’t do much to boost confidence in her abilities to command the attention of an audience, but at least people are still digging her music right? The singer released a few very popular singles last year, including “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans,” and producer Clams Casino (who produced multiple tracks on A$AP Rocky’s Live.Love.A$AP mixtape ) decided to put his own spin on “Born to Die,” the title track of her upcoming album

Diddy and Swizz Beatz were in attendance at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (January 15) and MTV News caught up with the two artists for a brief, if not comical interview on the red carpet. Diddy, declining to speak much, decided to hire Swizz Beatz as his official spokesman for the night. We learned Diddy’s favorite moment from the awards ceremony (via Swizz): “Morgan Freeman, for sure.” Then Diddy decided to break his silence to announce another highlight from the event, “Anything black!” According to Nielsen figures, the 69th annual Globes was seen by 16.8 million viewers, which is just below the 17 million who tuned in last year

There are a few special, landmark moments that are likely to make a musician feel like they’ve really made it : for example, singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, winning their first Grammy or making their debut appearance on “Saturday Night Live.” Indie/Internet darling Lana Del Rey (and one of MTV’s Artists to Watch in 2012 ) is about to cross one of those things off her list as she makes her U.S. television debut on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. Some might argue that it’s a risky move for “SNL” to book Lana so soon into her musical career

By William E. Ketchum III Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli’s reunion as the seminal 90s duo Black Star continued this week, when the duo performed Tuesday night (January 3) on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” In a video from NBC, ?uestlove gives the story behind Black Star’s performance track “Little Brother.” The afro’d drummer insists that the J Dilla-produced song, which samples Roy Ayers “Ain’t Got No Time” is “scientifically, one of the most intricate songs ever crafted.” ?uest explained that Dilla would rework samples that fellow producer Pete Rock used for his own beats, then destroy them out of respect for Rock.
